High Frequency Words/Spelling Section
What are High Frequency Words?
High frequency words are quite simply those words which occur most frequently in written material, for example, "and", "the", "as" and "it". They are often words that have little meaning on their own, but they do contribute a great deal to the meaning of a sentence. Some of the high frequency words can be sounded out using basic phonic rules, e.g. "it" is an easy word to read using phonics. However, many of the high frequency words are not phonically regular and are therefore hard to read in the early stages. These words are sometimes called trick words, sight words, camera words or heart words. In addition to being difficult to sound out, most of the high frequency words have a rather abstract meaning which is hard to explain to a child. It's easy to learn words like "cat" and "house" because they can easily be related to a real object or a picture, but how do you represent the word "the" or "of"?
Why learn the High Frequency Words?
“Researchers reckon that learning just 13 of the most frequently used words will enable children to read 25% of any text (OK that 25% wouldn't make much sense on its own, but it's a very good start).
Learning 100 high frequency words gives a beginner reader access to 50% of virtually any text, whether a children's book or a newspaper report.
When you couple immediate recognition of the high frequency sight words with a good knowledge of basic phonics, that's when a child's reading can really take off.”

How does this relate to CCPS and the first grade curriculum?
This year in reading we will be introducing high frequency words for students to be able to read “in a snap” (within 3 seconds) and spell. Some of these words we will call “heart words” and some of these words we will call “flash words.” Words that students can decode are the “flash words” for example: it, not, did; words that students cannot decode because of irregular sounds are known as “heart words,” for example: said, are and where. Students will also be expected to spell decodable words and use the word wall to help spell the “heart words.” Students will be given classroom time daily to practice with these words but it will be so important for you to continue to practice working with these words at home. Our homework will consist of nightly spelling homework to help students have more time to practice with these words. Below are some ideas for practicing high frequency words.
**Memory- Using the current word list, write them on two index cards. Turn the cards over face down and try to find a match.
**Hangman- Let your child look at the list. Select a word and make _ _ _ _ for the letters. Your child has to guess the word letter by letter before you draw the person. Spell the word, trade places and let your child select the word.
**Spelling Bee- You may let your child look at the list (or not), have a spelling bee…how many words can your spell correctly in a row?
**Word Hunt- Select 5 words from the list. Can you find these words in the newspaper, magazine, storybook, signs while driving or shopping?
**Play sight word bingo- Using your sight words make a bingo board.
**Use Play-doh, whipped cream, pudding, or snack foods like goldfish and make your words.
**Guess my word game- You and your child may look at the list. Pick a word. Finger write it on your child’s back. How many guesses does it take your child to guess your word? Switch places.
**Rainbow write your words using crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
